Heartstrings Alert! Boston Blue Episode 4 Set to Bring the First True Tearjerker of the Season

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 4 may be the first tearjerker the Blue Bloods spinoff offers.

It feels weird to be excited about what may be a heartbreaking episode, but this one looks so good.

Danny will join the Silvers in a memorial prayer for their late father, and I’m wondering if he will remember Joe and Linda at the same time.

Among Other Things, I’m Thrilled About the Jewish Representation

I’m very familiar with Jewish memorial customs, but that doesn’t mean everyone is, and there are no words to express what it means to me for this to be on national television.

I’m a spiritual person, and I always enjoyed the Reagans’ saying grace and other Catholic rituals because I enjoy learning about and vicariously participating in others’ religious traditions, but it’s different when it’s your own religion — and it isn’t depicted often on TV.

The Silvers aren’t Orthodox or Hasidic, the two Jewish sects that tend to get more airtime for some reason. And they are going to light a yortzeit lamp and probably say the Mourners’ Kaddish this week.

Traditionally, this is done on the anniversary in the Jewish calendar of a person’s death rather than the secular date, and it’ll be interesting to see whether Boston Blue incorporates this.

Of course, this story is important for other reasons too.

It’ll probably give us more insight into the Silver family’s backstory, but just as importantly, it gives Danny a way to bond with the Silvers over shared losses.

The Reagans have their own tragic history.

Joe Reagan’s death cast a shadow over every family gathering for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods, especially after Joe Hill popped up on the Blue Bloods Season 10 finale and couldn’t get over not having grown up with his late father.

This character died off-screen before Blue Bloods began, yet was arguably the most important member of the family because his death broke all their hearts.
