Chicago Fire Says Goodbye to Stella Kidd — But This Time, It’s for the Right Reasons
Chicago Fire delivered another emotional goodbye in Season 14’s sixth episode, “Broken Things,” but fans don’t need to panic — Stella Kidd’s (Miranda Rae Mayo) exit isn’t a heartbreak or a breakup. It’s a short-term departure rooted in compassion, not conflict.
Stella’s Big Decision
In the episode, Stella’s day was consumed by her ongoing mission to help Isaiah, the young boy she and Severide (Taylor Kinney) have been mentoring. When Stella discovered that Isaiah’s mother needed long-term care, she went above and beyond — contacting Sharon Goodwin over at Chicago Med to find the right facility.
At first, Stella balked at the idea. “Ohio?” she said, half in disbelief. But in true Kidd fashion, she chose action over hesitation. Rather than send Isaiah and his mother alone, Stella decided to relocate with them for several weeks to help them settle in — even if that meant leaving Firehouse 51 and her husband behind temporarily.
A Flashback to Season 10 — But With a Twist
Longtime fans might remember the last time Stella took off from Chicago in Season 10, when she traveled across the country to promote Girls on Fire. That absence caused tension between her and Severide — unanswered calls, mixed signals, and a rocky reunion.
This time, though, things couldn’t be more different. Stella and Severide are stronger than ever, fully communicating and supporting each other’s choices. Her departure feels like an act of love — both for Isaiah’s family and for the partnership she’s built with Severide.
As CinemaBlend’s Laura Hurley put it, “The circumstances couldn’t be more different. Helping Isaiah has been part of her parenthood journey, and she and Severide are as solid as they’ve ever been.”
Timing Is Everything
The episode aired just a week before Chicago Fire’s Season 14 fall finale, meaning Stella’s absence likely coincides with the show’s winter hiatus. Viewers can rest easy knowing her time in Cleveland could unfold off-screen, allowing her to return to Firehouse 51 early in the new year.
